MEDIA RELEASE

$685,000 FOR BLACK SPOT ROAD FUNDING IN BRADDON

Funding under the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program will substantially improve 17 dangerous crash sites on Tasmanian roads in 2022–23, including the construction of 2 new roundabouts in Braddon.

The new roundabouts at the intersection of Percy and Parker Streets in Devonport and the intersection of Gilbert Street and Percival Streets in Latrobe will have a significant impact on traffic safety and flow.

These projects are included in the $2.6 million of funding for Tasmanian roads under the Black Spot Program’s 2022–23 funding round.

The Black Spot Program funds safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at locations where a number of serious crashes are known to have occurred, or are at risk of occurring.

These Black Spot projects will make an important contribution towards reducing serious injuries and deaths on Tasmania’s roads and build on previous investments in the state.

Tasmanians have had a devastating year with 53 people dying on our roads; this is a 60.6% increase from 2021.

The panel that reviews priorities for the program in Tasmania includes representatives from the Royal Automobile Club of Tasmania, Tasmanian Transport Association, Tasmanian Motorcycle Council, Tasmanian Bicycle Network, Tasmania Police, Local Government Association of Tasmania, and Department of State Growth.

Senator Urquhart said: “The Black Spot Consultative Panels provide the opportunity for stakeholders to have a say in the project selection process, and ensure that nominations of the highest priority and importance to the local community are recommended for approval.”
