Environment Minister visits West Coast of Tasmania

The Minister for the Environment and Water, Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, visited the West Coast of Tasmania on Thursday and Friday, at the request of her Tasmanian Labor colleague Senator Anne Urquhart.

Ms Plibersek travelled with Senator Urquhart to learn about the proposed site of the MMG Tailings Storage Facility at South Marionoak, near Rosebery.

They also visited parts of the Tarkine rainforest, which many have called for to be included in the World Heritage register, and met with a range of stakeholders from both industry and environmental groups.

This included a helicopter flight over the rainforest led by Parks Tasmania.

Quotes attributable to Senator for Tasmania, Anne Urquhart:

“As soon as Ms Plibersek was named as Minister for the Environment, I asked her to visit the proposed site for the MMG tailing storage facility.

“I know the Minister loves the North-West of Tasmania and its West Coast and I was keen to show her some of the challenges of supporting jobs while protecting the environment.

“As well as visiting the area I arranged for the Minister to meet with a range of stakeholders.

“I am really pleased she took up my invitation so she can be fully informed about what the issues, challenges and opportunities are in regard to this project.”
